REVIEW: APRILIA SPORTCITY 250

The sportiest large-wheel scooter on the market has moved on to the next stage in its evolution with the arrival of the brand new Aprilia SPORTCITY 250 i.e. Faster, safer and even more ecological, the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. is ready to challenge city traffic as well as motorway stints with a class-leading, high-tech engine.

More power, better acceleration and higher performance mean more fun and safety in fast-flowing traffic. Riders benefit from a new triple disc braking system and a brand new, cleaner engine. The new 250 i.e. is the first compact large wheel scooter powered by a 250cc engine with electronic fuel injection. The large wheels mean this scooter is safer to ride than a small-wheel machine, and ride quality is more akin to a motorcycle’s.

STYLING AND ERGONOMICS

The styling of the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. is clean and essential; elegant lines turn this powerful, robust machine into a stylish accessory. Finish is more refined than ever – just look at that two-tone seat and chrome plated crash bars, plus many other details, including instruments with dedicated graphics and painted surrounds. The chrome edged leg shield and the aggressive looking double front light unit give the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. a personality worthy of the Aprilia name.

The analogue-digital instrumentation includes a rev counter and the multifunctional display found on the latest superbikes. Display functions are controlled directly from the handlebars for maximum safety.

 

The new, large seat is spacious and comfortable even when riding two-up, thanks to an ergonomic design that provides maximum support for rider and passenger. It is upholstered in a new non-slip textile to prevent you from sliding forward under braking, making it even more comfortable and safer too. Seat height is just 815mm.

The SPORTCITY 250 i.e. boasts a large and perfectly flat platform for maximum comfort and extra load carrying capacity. The platform narrows under the rider’s legs so that riders can to place both feet easily and firmly on the ground.

The ample leg shield provides excellent weather protection, with two vents that deliver warm air from the radiator to keep the rider’s legs warm in winter when used in conjunction with the optional Aprilia leg cover.

LOAD CAPACITY

Load carrying capacity is fundamental to a scooter, and thanks to a huge effort during the design phase, the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. is small on the outside but large on the inside.

Despite the compact size and large wheels, the rider still benefits from a larger than ever under-seat storage compartment, big enough to hold a full-fact helmet and other personal effects.

Through clever use of space Aprilia has also built a closed, lockable storage compartment into the rear of the leg shield. This even contains a practical power socket for charging your mobile phone. Meanwhile, the practical luggage rack incorporates robust passenger grab handles and can accept a top box to increase carrying capacity.

CHASSIS

The SPORTCITY 250 i.e.’s frame is made from high strength tubular steel, and is for excellent torsional rigidity and strength. This rigid, efficient frame gives the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. a superior ride, with Aprilia’s famous sports handling.

The hydraulic fork uses 35mm stanchions for precision control and excellent comfort over even the roughest road surfaces. The fork has a wheel travel of 100mm, just the job for tackling city cobblestones and manhole covers.

The engine and transmission assembly also act as swingarm. Suspension is provided by two rear shock absorbers. Spring preload is adjustable for maximum efficiency under all load and road conditions. Rear wheel travel is 80mm, more than enough to smooth out even the roughest surfaces.

The SPORTCITY 250 i.e. is equipped with 15 inch wheels and large, high profile tubeless tyres (120/70 at the front and 130/80 at the rear). Rolling diameter is equivalent to that of a 16 inch tyre but the ability to absorb shocks from rough road surfaces is far better, ensuring a superbly smooth ride. In conjunction with the excellent frame, these tyres give the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. excellent stability, and the sort of intuitive feel that makes it a doddle to ride even for novices.

The SPORTCITY 250 i.e.’s all-new braking system features triple discs for far shorter stopping distances and improved safety. Even inexperienced riders will have no trouble stopping in very short distances. At 90 km/h the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. takes just 2.7 seconds to come to a full stop. The front brakes feature two 260mm discs and floating calipers with two parallel pistons. Rear disc is 220mm with single piston caliper.

ENGINE

Engine technology is another major plus point for the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. Its new electronic fuel injected engine is state of the art on the scooter scene. Powerful, flexible, and extremely low on emissions and consumption, this 250cc single cylinder unit is perfect for the job in hand.

Developing 22.5 HP at 8,000 rpm with 21Nm of torque at 6,250 rpm, the engine delivers standard-setting performance. It also enables the Sportcity to function as a fun to ride sports scooter both in town centres and on fast urban ring roads.

And the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. respects the environment wherever it goes, being one of the few scooters to conform to Euro 3 emission control standards. Finally, miserly fuel consumption and a generous 9 litre tank give the SPORTCITY 250 i.e. great autonomy.
