Johnathon Rea Tops The Time Sheets
Round five of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place
this weekend at Mondello Park in Southern Ireland, and it is Irish
rider Johnny "Stormy" Rea on the Red Bull Honda who is setting the pace
in free practice one.
Last year saw Rea take his first Superbike pole position at his local
circuit however he didn't have a good run in the race as he got hooked
off his Honda by another rider on the very first turn of race one and
race two ended with a technical problem.
This season has seen a more mature and relaxed Rea battling with the
big names in the class and he did take his first, if short lived podium
at Oulton Park. He is already under the lap record of 1min 40.076secs
with a lap time of 1min 39.872secs, he is hoping with the backing of
his home crowd to take that elusive win.
Second fastest was HM Plant Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari who took a race
win here last year. Kiyo has been lacking in form for the past few
rounds but he is looking like his old self at Mondello and a podium
would boost his confidence.

Leon Haslam was third fastest on the Airwaves Ducati and is yet another
rider who is out for a win. Haslam has been consistent with his pole
positions but his team-mate and current British Superbike Champion
Gregorio Lavilla has so far this season beaten Haslam into second place
each time.
Rizla Suzuki's Shane Byrne was fourth fastest with Scott Smart on the Vivaldi Suzuki rounded out the top five.
