RECORD BREAKING MCGUINNESS WINS SUPERBIKE CLASS
HM Plant Honda’s John McGuinness rode a faultless ride to claim Superbike
victory at the 2006 Isle of Man TT Festival today (3 June). McGuinness not only
won the race in record time but, set a new lap record on the opening lap and
then smashed it on the second with unbelievable average speed of 127.933mph.
The Honda rider had demonstrated throughout the Practice Week that he
was the man to beat aboard his Dunlop-shod Honda CBR1000RR machine and today he
proved just that, with a blistering record breaking ride from start to finish
around the 37.73-mile circuit.
On the opening lap, McGuinness
immediately established a five second lead over Ian Hutchinson and by the time
he had reached the Bungalow section of the track the 33-year-old racer had
doubled it to ten seconds. As McGuinness crossed the start-finish line he had
set a new lap record of 127.83mph from a standing start.
The HM Plant
rider started lap two with a twelve second lead over Hutchinson, an advantage
that he would extend to 23 seconds by the end of the lap, while smashing
newly-set lap record in the process.
Throughout the challenging
226.38-mile race McGuinness demonstrated his smooth and consistent riding style
as he dominated proceedings and finished and impressive 39 seconds ahead of
Stobart Honda’s Ian Lougher, and claiming Honda’s 126th TT win.
John
McGuinness: “It’s been absolutely brilliant to win the Superbike race. I
just wanted to get out there today and get the job done. You don’t have any time
to mess around here. My first pit board said +0.8, so I knew some one was on my
tail so I just pushed and pushed, and as I came round the plusses on the pit
board crept up. The conditions were near perfect, a little bit cooler on the
Mountain but it gave you a chance to cool down a bit. It really was a pleasure
riding round. I came across a few slower riders towards the end, a couple at
the Ramsey Hairpin, I thought about lunging down the inside but I thought it
better to be patient rather than throw away a 38 second lead. It has been a
great team effort, everyone has worked really hard, I said all along that I
couldn’t fault the bike, which was build for the TT, and today we have shown
just how good it is.”
Neil Tuxworth: “We are delighted for John
and team, they deserve the win. He took control from the start and rode an
excellent race. It was a great way to start the week off and hope that we can
replicate the result next week.”
