NIETO GOES TOP FIVE IN RACE TWO AT QATAR

Doha/Losail, Quatar, 25 February 2007 - Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) battled impressively at Losail to score a top five finish in race two, while Regis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) scored points for 11th.

Nieto was part of the a breakaway five-rider leading group in the early laps, and despite great pressure from behind towards the end he held onto fifth place, to go 10th overall in the championship. Laconi had problems with the duration of grip from his front tyre in the second race and had to ride carefully and smoothly to ensure a points score.

An unfortunate coming together between the PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse riders on lap eight of race one put them both out, as they collided under braking for the first corner.

Fonsi Nieto: “I should be very happy for the result of race two but instead I am very angry about the gap between the bikes. It is not the tyres or the bike but my physical condition because I was sick all week and during the race my head felt like a ball. It was impossible to do better than this. My bike was very good and in the middle of the race I tried to save the tyres, so when Kagayama and Lanzi came through I knew I was ready and I could stay in front of them. In race one I only heard someone hit me from behind, then I recognised it was Regis, but this is racing then these things happen.”

Regis Laconi: “It was a shame about race one but when Fonsi braked he braked so hard I could not stop - but it was my fault. My front tyre was the problem in race two and after about five laps it started to slide and it was not easy to ride like that. But I gave it all I could. I am happy to finish the race because we did not finish race one, and at one point I was racing with the guy who was the champion last year, so it can’t be that bad. Now, in my mind, I am already in Phillip Island!”
