Superbike Double Win For HM Plant Hondas Steve Plater

Steve Plater not only achieved his first Kennedy International North West 200 win today (14 May) but he managed to do the double and break the lap record. John McGuinness also achieved a double of his own with two third places for HM Plant Honda in the hard-fought Superbike classes

Perfect weather conditions prevailed and despite a difficult start to the DeWalt Performance Tools Superbike race, Plater soon moved his way through the pack from seventh place into podium contention. He tailed Stobart Honda’s Michael Rutter on the last lap putting him under immense pressure, to which
Rutter succumbed crashing out at the Juniper Hill Chicane. Meanwhile team-mate McGuinness maintained a steady pace from his pole position start to hold onto third aboard his HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

In race two, the Blackhorse Motorcycle Finance NW 200 Superbike event, saw Plater make a better start aboard his Dunlop-shod race machine and was immediately in third place, moving up to second and chasing Rutter once again. On the final lap Rutter and Plater came across a back marker which gave the HM Plant Honda rider the opportunity to pass for the race win, as well as setting the new lap record of 4min 20.074secs. McGuinness had a tough race working from a sixth place start through to his second podium finish of the day.

Steve Plater: “I’m over the moon, even though I won the first race and I was happy with everything, I was a little disappointed as I didn’t break the lap record. So I wanted to go harder in the second, and get it. In the first race I pressurised Michael as much as I could on the last lap and it worked. In race two, Michael was happy trying to do the same to me I then caught a back marker at Juniper on the final lap. So I just shot underneath him I then knew Michael couldn’t get me back it was perfect!”

John McGuinness: “To get on the podium twice is great. In the first race we were a little bit closer, in the second race I got left behind in no man’s land. I got tangled up at the beginning and couldn’t quite make it through to the front. This result is a testament to the HM Plant Honda Superbike team. It was good, and it’s a good ticket to the TT now. In a way it was a bit of a shake down for that and I’m confident that at the TT we can go quick and hopefully win.”

Team Manager Havier Beltran: “Good results all round. I’m really happy for John putting it on the podium for both races and fantastic result for Steve Plater, two wins and braking the lap record three times in the last race! Brilliant result.”
