LAVILLA EXTENDS HIS BSB LEAD

Reigning champion Gregorio Lavilla extended his British Superbikes Championship lead with a win and a third place finish at Donington Park.

The Ducati Airwaves rider took victory in a rain, hail and sleet-hit opener. Ryuichi Kiyonari (Honda) was a close second with Leon Haslam (Ducati) third.

In the second race, Suzuki’s Scott Smart eased to victory, with Haslam passing Lavilla late on to seal second.

Lavilla (82 points) leads the standings from Kiyonari (58) and Haslam (56).

Spaniard Lavilla led Kiyonari by little more than a tenth of a second when the opening race was brought to a premature halt by atrocious weather conditions.

Even after the red flags had stopped the race several riders, among them former champion Shane Byrne, Michael Laverty and Jonathan Rea, crashed out.

The second race began in equally difficult going with first Michael Rutter, then Karl Harris and Haslam making the running before Smart took over on the fifth lap.

“Apart from a few anxious moments, I was fairly comfortable – in these conditions you have to be super-smooth,” said Smart.

“Once I was out front, there were no problems with the spray but over the last few laps my fingers had gone numb and it was just a case of hanging on and holding Haslam off on the final lap.”

Haslam grabbed second place on the last lap from Lavilla, while Kiyonari crashed out of the second race.
